Slyce Privacy Policy

↓ THE SHORT VERSION

Slyce keeps your data on your phone. Your receipts, the people you split with, your groups, your profile and your settings all live on your device. There is no Slyce account, nothing syncs to a cloud, and Appy Dan runs no servers that hold your information.

So if you ask us what data we hold about you, the honest answer is: none on our side. It’s all on your device, in your control — view, edit or delete it any time.

One thing leaves your device: when you scan a receipt, the photo is sent to Google’s Gemini AI to read the items and prices. Google reads it as our processor — on the paid service we use it does not use your receipts to train its AI, and keeps them only briefly for safety checks.

We never sell your data, and Apple — not us — handles all payments.

01 — WHO WE ARE

Who we are

Slyce (“Slyce”, “we”, “us” or “our”) is a receipt-splitting app for iPhone. You scan a receipt, add the people who were there, decide who had what, and share a clear breakdown of who owes what.

This policy explains what information the app handles, why, and the choices you have. For the purposes of UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018), the data controller is Appy Dan, contactable at hello@appydan.io.

This policy applies to the Slyce app and to appydan.io.

02 — WHAT WE COLLECT

Information you create in the app

Slyce only holds the information needed to split a bill. Almost all of it is created by you, on your device, and stays there.

Your profile

  • The display name you choose, plus a hand-drawn avatar illustration and colour you pick. Slyce does not let you upload a photo of yourself.
  • Your preferences — default currency, default tip, whether to include tax or service by default, and whether haptics are on.

People you split with

  • The names (and optional surnames) of people you add as participants, along with the avatar illustrations you assign them.
  • Saved groups (for example “Flatmates” or “Pub crew”) and a list of recent participants, so you can add the same people again quickly.

Receipts and splits

  • Photos of receipts you scan or import, and the information read from them — merchant name and location, line items, quantities, prices, totals, tax, service charge, tip, currency and date.
  • Optional event names you give a split (for example “Team lunch”), how the bill was divided, and any disputes or edits made along the way.

Payment details (optional)

  • Any payment handles you choose to add so people can pay you back — for example PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Apple Pay, Zelle, Monzo or Revolut usernames, or a custom payment link.
  • If you choose to add bank details (such as an account name, sort code or account number), they are stored only in your device’s secure Keychain — not in the app’s ordinary storage — and are included in a summary only when you choose to share one.

You don’t have to provide any of this. Payment details and surnames are entirely optional, and you can edit or remove them at any time in Settings.

03 — PERMISSIONS

Permissions on your device

Slyce asks for a small number of system permissions. Each is optional, requested only in context, and used only for the purpose described. You can change your mind at any time in iOS Settings.

PERMISSIONOPTIONAL
CameraUsed to scan a receipt. The camera is only active while you’re scanning, and the image is used to read the receipt — see section 6.OPTIONAL · REVOCABLE
Photo libraryUsed so you can pick an existing photo of a receipt instead of scanning one. Slyce only accesses the photo you choose.OPTIONAL · REVOCABLE
ContactsOptional. If you allow it, you can import contacts as a quick way to add people to a split. Imported names stay on your device and are used only to suggest participants. Slyce does not upload your contacts.OPTIONAL · REVOCABLE
04 — COLLECTED AUTOMATICALLY

Information collected automatically

Purchases

Slyce uses Apple’s in-app purchase system (StoreKit) for one-off token packs and any subscription. Apple processes the payment and ties your purchase to your Apple ID — we never see or store your card details. We receive confirmation that a valid purchase was made so we can unlock the corresponding access. Your purchase history is held by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy, and it’s what lets you restore tokens on a new device.

Diagnostics and usage

To keep the app working well and understand which features are useful, Slyce uses:

  • Product analytics (PostHog) — pseudonymous information about how the app is used, such as which screens are opened and broad device/app-version details. This is not used to identify you personally.
  • Crash reporting (Sentry) — technical diagnostic reports if the app crashes, so we can fix bugs. These can include device model, OS version and a technical stack trace.

When the app detects a merchant’s website on a receipt, it may also make a request to fetch that merchant’s logo for display. This involves the merchant name or web address, not your personal data.

05 — WHERE IT LIVES

Where your data lives

Slyce is local-first. Your receipts, people, groups, profile and settings are stored on your device using Apple’s on-device database, and your bank details are kept in the device Keychain. There is currently no Slyce account, and your data is not synced to any cloud or shared with us.

We don’t hold a copy. Appy Dan operates no servers, databases or accounts that store your receipts, the people you split with, or any personal details about you. If you asked us for the personal data we hold about you, we would have nothing to send — because we never receive it in the first place. It stays on your device, which only you control, and you can delete it at any time.

The exceptions are described elsewhere in this policy: receipt images sent to Google for reading (section 6), purchases handled by Apple (section 4), and the diagnostics above (section 4).

Looking ahead: we plan to add optional Slyce accounts and cloud sync in a future version so you can back up and share splits across devices. That is not active today. Before any such feature launches, we will update this policy and ask for any consent that’s required.

06 — SCANNING & AI

Receipt scanning & AI

The one part of Slyce where information leaves your device by design is reading a receipt.

When you scan or import a receipt, the app compresses the image and sends it to Google’s Gemini AI, which reads the receipt and returns the structured details (merchant, items, prices, totals). This is what saves you typing everything in by hand.

  • The image is reduced in size before sending and is used only to read the receipt — it is not published anywhere, and Appy Dan keeps no copy of it.
  • Google acts as our service provider (processor) for this. On the paid Gemini service we use, Google does not use your receipts to train or improve its AI models.
  • Google retains the image only for a limited period for security and abuse-prevention checks, after which it is cleared. It is not added to any profile or kept long-term.
  • You can read how Google handles data for its AI service at ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms and policies.google.com/privacy.

A note of caution: receipts can sometimes show partial card numbers or other details. Only scan receipts you’re comfortable having read by the AI, and avoid capturing anything you don’t want processed.

07 — HOW WE USE IT

How we use your data

We use the information above only to run the app and keep it working:

  • To provide Slyce — reading receipts, splitting bills, saving people and groups, and generating the summaries you share.
  • To process purchases — unlocking tokens or a subscription via Apple.
  • To improve and fix the app — through the diagnostics and analytics described in section 4.
  • To meet legal obligations — for example, keeping basic records of purchases.

Under UK and EU data protection law, our lawful bases are: performance of a contract (providing the app and processing your purchases), our legitimate interests (keeping the app secure, stable and improving it, in a way that doesn’t override your rights), consent (for optional permissions such as contacts, and where required for analytics), and legal obligation where the law requires it. You can withdraw consent at any time.

08 — SHARING

Who we share with

We do not sell your personal data, and we don’t share it for advertising. We share information only with the service providers that make the app work:

  • Apple — app distribution and in-app purchases.
  • Google — reading receipt images via Gemini AI (section 6).
  • Analytics & crash-reporting providers (PostHog, Sentry) — diagnostics and usage (section 4).

These providers act on our behalf and are only permitted to use the data to provide their service to us.

People you choose to share with

When you generate a payment summary and send it (for example as a PDF through the iOS share sheet), you decide who receives it. That summary contains the split breakdown and any payment handles you’ve added. Once you share it, how the recipient handles it is outside our control.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect our rights, safety, or the integrity of the app.

09 — RETENTION

How long we keep it

  • On-device data stays until you remove it. You can delete an individual receipt or person, clear data in the app, or delete the app — which removes the data Slyce stored on that device.
  • Purchases are retained by Apple as part of your Apple ID purchase history, which is what allows tokens to be restored after reinstalling or switching devices.
  • Diagnostics and analytics are retained by those providers for a limited period in line with their own policies, then deleted or aggregated.
  • Receipt images sent for reading are processed to return data and are not stored by us.
10 — YOUR RIGHTS

Your rights

Because Slyce keeps your data on your device, you are largely in direct control: you can view, edit and delete your information at any time within the app.

Under the UK GDPR (and EU GDPR where it applies), you also have the right to: access your data, correct it, erase it, restrict or object to processing, request portability, and withdraw consent.

What we actually hold about you: because Slyce stores everything on your device, Appy Dan holds no copy of your receipts, the people you split with, or your profile on its own systems. In practice you exercise these rights yourself by viewing, editing or deleting your data directly in the app. For anything else, contact us at hello@appydan.io and we will respond within the timeframes the law requires.

You have the right to complain to the UK’s supervisory authority, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), at ico.org.uk. We’d appreciate the chance to help first.

California residents: we do not sell or “share” personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA, and you have rights to know about and delete personal information we hold and not to be discriminated against for exercising them.

11 — TRANSFERS

International transfers

Some of our service providers (such as Apple and Google) operate globally, so limited data described in this policy may be processed outside the UK and the European Economic Area. Where that happens, those transfers are covered by appropriate safeguards — such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement, the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, or an adequacy decision — so your information receives an equivalent level of protection.

12 — SECURITY

Security

We design Slyce to keep your information safe: it is stored on your device, sensitive details like bank information are held in the iOS Keychain, and data sent for receipt reading travels over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection. Your device’s own protections — such as a passcode, Face ID or Touch ID — help keep the app’s data secure.

No method of storage or transmission is ever completely secure, so while we take reasonable steps to protect your information, we can’t guarantee absolute security.

13 — CHILDREN

Children

Slyce is intended for general audiences and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to remove it.

14 — CHANGES

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time — for example, when we add new features such as accounts or cloud sync. When we do, we’ll change the “last updated” date at the top, and for significant changes we’ll provide a more prominent notice in the app or on our website. Please check back occasionally.
